Afternoon Matinee

The renowned prankster Hugh Troy once collected an impressive number of live moths from around a porch light and took them to the local movie house in a shoe box.  After the movie started he opened the box and the moths all migrated to the beam of light from the projector, thus making the film unviewable.  What I've never been able to figure out is if moths like the light so much, why do they only come out at night?

The moth incident took place in a college theater, and the audience expressed its displeasure in the traditional manner of whistling, footstamping, and catcalling.  The manager turned on the house lights, and the moths promptly disappeared, only to migrate back to the beam when the film restarted.  Troy then saved the day with a giant butterfly net.
